Between June 5th to June 7th, the inaugural Villa María Model United Nations (VMMUN) was held on the Villa María campus. Alpamayo brought 22 of our Seniors to this first year of VMMUN, joining the 859 other students from schools around Lima. This was our Seniors’ first experience with Model United Nations. Our school represented three different countries through various committees: India, Jordan and Iceland.
The event started off Friday, June 5th, with registration followed by the opening session for debate. The first day of events ended at 8pm and the “Diplomats Cocktail” followed thereafter so that the students from the 18 different schools could mingle and get to know one another before the next two days of events got started.
All participants were on the campus Saturday, June 6th, at 9am. This early start allowed a full day of debates to kick off until 6pm, when all the participants had to prepare for the Global Village and talent show. Our school was one of only six to make an effort to prepare and participate in this showcase of social, cultural, and musical events related to the countries they were representing. A special mention should be made of our Icelandic indie-folk band, with members Cristian Carrión, Álvaro Díaz, Alonso Díaz, Ismael Pardo and Juan Pablo Nöel rocking the house to thunderous applause.
Another early start on Sunday allowed the participants to make their closing resolutions in their respective committees, ending with the closing ceremony at 6pm. It gives us great pleasure to say that two of our students—Bruno Vargas (World Bank India) and Cristian Carrion (Crisis Committee NATO Iceland)—both received special recognition.
