It was on a Sunday morning, March 6th, 2016, that all the effort and training over the last few months had finally come to fruition. Nine Alpamayo students and thirteen students from Hiram Bingham were departing for the 10th Anniversary Montessori Model United Nations Conference (MMUN) in New York, USA.
On Wednesday we moved from our uptown hostal to the Midtown Hilton for the start of the MMUN. After a lengthy check-in we made it to the flag procession carrying the flags of the three countries we would be representing at the conference, Canada, Australia, and Costa Rica. Later that night the students set up their country displays with what they had learned about those cultures. Over the next two days, at the various committees like ECOFIN, DISEC and SOCHUM, our students gave opening speeches, formed blocks, participated and reached consensus with the other delegates to arrive at draft resolutions that would be voted upon at the General Assembly of the UN building on Saturday.
Finally, on Saturday morning we left for the United Nations General Assembly building where the students took their seats in the actual seats on the floor the general assembly itself for the final round of voting on the resolutions. To be in that cathedral of political democracy was the highlight of the trip. That evening we went to the Peruvian Ambassador’s home where he and his wife gave us a special dinner party to celebrate the first time a school delegation had ever represented Peru at such a prestigious event.
As the saying goes ‘All good things must come to an end’, and so, after a long and tiring flight, we eventually returned home late Sunday night, wearier but wiser for having gone. It was especially fulfilling to hear the unsolicited comments of shop staff, hotel staff, and members of the Dias about the respect, politeness, participation, and preparedness of our boys. They were all a credit to their families, their school and most importantly themselves.
